A photographer should look for clients where people ask for a photographer recommendation themselves: in posts like “recommend a photographer in...” or “any photographers for a family shoot?” on Threads, and in city groups and chats of Ukrainians abroad on Telegram. These requests almost always name a city, an occasion and a date, so reply quickly and to the point: advice on the place, light or format of the shoot, with no price list in the first comment. Below is what these requests sound like, where to find them, how to reply and what Zapyt can do with this.

How do people look for a photographer?

Here are requests from our sample of posts for photographers and related services that our system classified as requests for a recommendation (paraphrased, without names or details that could identify the author):

  • “Recommend a photographer in Lisbon for a birthday photo shoot.”
  • “Any photographers in southern Portugal for a family shoot at the end of the month?”
  • “Looking for a photographer for a maternity shoot with my family - and someone who shoots with a drone.”
  • “Recommend a photographer in Portugal for a personal shoot.”
  • “Looking for a stylist and makeup artist who travel to an out-of-town wedding.”

What these examples show (an observation, not a count):

  • The city is almost always named. People need a photographer where they are, so a request from another city isn't your client.
  • The date is often close. “At the end of the month” means a reply a week later is already too late.
  • One post can ask for several services. A shoot and a drone, a stylist and a makeup artist. If you do both or know someone to recommend, say so.
  • Some requests come from Ukrainians abroad. Three of the five examples above are from Portugal. People in a new country don't know local specialists and look for a photographer who speaks their language.

How many such requests are there?

Our demand index has no separate numbers for photographers yet. A business appears there once it has at least 10 requests in a week, and photographers aren't in the latest index snapshot. We don't make up a number and don't compare with other lines of business: the searches for each are set up separately.

It's also fair to mention the season: people book photographers for weddings, graduations and holidays, so the number of requests can change noticeably from month to month. How much exactly, only a search for your city will show.

Where can a photographer find clients?

Threads. Search intent phrases on the “Recent” tab: “recommend a photographer”, “looking for a photographer”, “who shoots”, “photo shoot” plus the city name. Try different word forms, and the city name in both languages if you work abroad. More in how to find clients on Threads.

Telegram. Chats of Ukrainians in your city or country, parents' groups, wedding communities. Each group has its own rules, and ads are often banned there, while a reply to a direct request usually isn't. How not to get removed is covered in finding clients in Telegram chats.

Related requests. Someone is looking for a makeup artist or a wedding planner and hasn't picked a photographer yet. Reply to those posts only when you genuinely have useful advice on what they asked, not just to remind people you exist.

How should a photographer answer “recommend a photographer”?

A post like that quickly collects a chorus of portfolio links. People reply to whoever sounds like a person and shows they read this particular post. The structure we use in drafts:

  • First sentence: advice for this shoot. Place, time of day, light, format. Something useful even if the person picks someone else.
  • One mention of yourself. How you usually work, without a list of services.
  • One question at the end. About the mood, the date, how many people.
  • No price list or link in the first comment. People will find your portfolio in your profile, so make sure it's in order.

Here's what a reply to the Lisbon post might look like:

In Lisbon a lot depends on the hour: the viewpoints are nearly empty in the morning, while evening light is softer but busier. I usually plan the route around the mood of the shoot. Are you drawn more to the city or the ocean?

More before and after examples are in how to answer “any recommendations?”.

What Zapyt can do

Every day Zapyt searches Threads and Telegram for requests to recommend a photographer with your city or cities in mind, scores each post and drafts two reply options in your voice. You list the cities in your brief, and requests from other places get a lower score. You see every reply before it goes out, and nothing is sent without your “yes”. Examples of requests and replies are collected on the Photographers page. Plans start at $99 a month, and the first 7 days are free: pricing.

FAQ

Where can a photographer find clients without ads?

In public requests for a photographer recommendation: on Threads through search for intent phrases with the city name, on Telegram in city chats and communities of Ukrainians abroad. Reply with advice, not a price list.

I don't shoot in Ukraine. Does this work?

Yes, if your clients are Ukrainians who write in Ukrainian. Of the examples in this article, three out of five are from Portugal.

Should I link my portfolio in the first comment?

Better not. A link in the first comment looks like an ad. Someone who liked your reply will visit your profile, and a link fits as the second step.

Is it worth looking for clients off-season?

Check it during the trial week: you'll see how many requests for your kind of shoot there are right now. If there are hardly any, we'll say so honestly, and you can decide when to come back.
